Call for Papers

The AFRC organizing committee requests abstracts of papers for presentation at the American Flame Research Committee's 2025 Industrial Combustion Symposium to be held September 15–17, 2025, at Embassy Suites by Hilton San Antonio Riverwalk Downtown in San Antonio, TX. The Annual Industrial Combustion Symposium provides a unique forum for combustion professionals to network, display their work, receive direct feedback, and learn from each other.

Abstracts on all topics related to combustion and flames are welcome. The theme for the 2025 Symposium is “Fired Equipment Safeguarding,” and therefore, topics related to this theme are encouraged. Past presentations have covered a wide spectrum including:

  • Fundamental research to laboratory, pilot, and full-scale testing
  • Computer simulations to industrial applications
  • Combustion equipment design to operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Suggested topics from previous Symposium attendees can be found on the Call for Papers page on the AFRC website.

All combustion equipment types are covered. A sampling of papers from past meetings.

Deadline to submit abstracts: Friday, April 04, 2025

Guideline for Abstracts

Abstracts should be no more than one-page in length and provide a brief overview of the presentation topic along with enough information to help decide on its acceptability.

Submit an Abstract
If your abstract is accepted, submitter will be responsible for following the guidelines regarding submission of formal paper and presentation at the Symposium.

Guidelines for Papers

Please note that the AFRC policy is "No Paper, No Podium!" If you do not submit a written paper by the deadline, you will be unable to present at the Symposium even if your abstract had been accepted. The final paper must be submitted by August 08, 2025. We urge you to submit your paper early, as our deadlines are firm. Your cooperation and support are greatly appreciated.

In the interest of maintaining the quality of papers presented at the Symposium, we encourage the intending authors to present work that contains new data and/or analyses, new analyses/interpretation of old data or enlightening interpretation of new government regulations or industrial practices. Papers based on data or information readily available in books, standards or recommended practices are strongly discouraged.

The following requirements must be met to complete the abstract submission.

AFRC Abstract Requirements
  • Abstract submission requires one main contact for all communications and responsible for all items submitted for the Symposium.
  • Speaker must be confirmed in writing within a month (no later than June 30, 2025) upon the abstract being accepted to the program.
  • Speaker agrees to provide bio/headshot for marketing and on-site introductions no later than June 30, 2025.
  • Speaker agrees that the presentation will contain technical information and free of commercial and sales references.
  • Speaker agrees to register for the Symposium.
